about

Blood and Dust, a duo of dark queerdos, make horror music in a world full of horrors.

“Rites of Blood and Dust” is their inaugural EP, born out of a fascination for magic and the occult, horror movies and their social/emotional impact, as well as personal traumas and transformations. It is the music of unrelenting fear, of grief, of holding onto hope despite hopelessness, of stepping into darkness and coming out changed. Each song was created intuitively, expressing wordless, co-created stories inspired by various horror subgenres like demonic possession and folk horror, but driven primarily by our deepest and darkest internal experiences. Listen, and you will hear dust shifting across the floor in an abandoned attic; the creak of ancient wood at night; blood seeping through the grass; dead leaves gathering at an unmarked grave.

Another core facet of “Rites of Blood and Dust” is the exploration of queerness and neurodivergence in the context of horror and occult ritual. Both artists exist between the gender binary, one is on the spectrum, another is certainly mad, and from a place of radical honesty and vulnerability (not a painless process), they seek to give voice to the experience of being “other” in a world terrorized by normative violence. They believe the experience of horror through art can help people process their deepest fears and wounds, whether it stems from traumatic experiences, systemic oppression, or both.

Looking at the album post-production, Lizbeth and Hex recognized “Rites of Blood and Dust” as arising from a need, personal and collective, to shine a light into uncomfortable parts of the soul and the world, and to keep our eyes there—on those “ugly” places, those wounded places—to feel them and acknowledge them and share what is ready to share. They invite you to do the same; to immerse yourself in sonic dread, visceral mess, and delicate grief: a journey that is as much about suffering as it is healing. Neither has emerged the same, and they hope that this album helps others in a similar way.

100% of the profits (other than Bandcamp’s 15% cut) will be donated, on a rotating weekly basis to The Okra Project (NYC), a “collective that seeks to address the global crisis of violence by providing resources and meals to Black Trans people worldwide,” and Taking What We Need (Montréal), a “community group dedicated helping low-income transwomen get what they need”; they are currently prioritizing Black and Indigenous Trans-Feminine applicants in Montréal, and they distribute on a rotating chronological/lottery system. The money made from our album sales will continue to be donated for the foreseeable future.

about

Blood and Dust Montreal, Québec

Blood and Dust is a collaboration of two dark queerdos inspired by horror cinema and occult myth. Part horror drone, part spookfolk, part post-rock, they blend synth and cello into nightmarish auditory rituals. It is the music you hear while wandering a cursed manor at night, calling you to the basement where dreadful things happen. Bring your salt, and stay safe while communing with the dead. ... more
